The short answer
Metal shingles are steel or aluminum panels pressed to look like asphalt shingles, shakes, slate or tile. Stone-coated steel adds a layer of stone granules bonded to the steel. Michigan roofers publish metal shingles at $7 to $12 per square foot installed (Weather Vane Roofing) and stone-coated steel at $10 to $15; a stone-coated job in Berkley came to about $15.95 per square foot (Roofing Army). The DECRA, Westlake Royal and EDCO lines carry Class 4 hail ratings and long warranties, and DECRA's runs for the original owner's lifetime. Michigan's code allows metal shingles over one existing layer only, and the roof needs a slope of at least 3:12.
What metal shingles and stone-coated steel are
EDCO, a steel shingle maker, puts it simply: "Despite their name, metal shingles aren't technically shingles; they are interlocking panels designed to mimic the appearance of asphalt, cedar shakes, or slate tiles." Each panel covers several shingles' worth of roof. If you've searched for metal architectural shingles, these are the products you'll find.
Painted steel and aluminum shingles
Smooth or embossed panels with a painted finish, in shingle, shake and slate profiles. The Metal Roofing Alliance says aluminum is lighter than steel and resists corrosion better.
Stone-coated steel
DECRA's spec sheet lists the layers: steel with an aluminum-zinc hot-dip coating, an acrylic primer and basecoat, ceramic-coated stone granules, and an acrylic over-glaze. The granules give it the matte look of asphalt or wood rather than the shine of painted metal. DECRA's panels weigh about 150 lb per square installed, which it puts at 1.4 to 1.6 lb per square foot.

Published Michigan prices for metal shingles and stone-coated steel
| Roofing | Published price | Who publishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Metal shingles, installed | $7.50 – $12.00 per sq ft | Mr. Roof (Detroit cost guide) |
| Metal shingles, installed | $7 – $12 per sq ft | Weather Vane Roofing (Mid-Michigan) |
| Stone-coated steel, installed | $10 – $15 per sq ft | Weather Vane Roofing (Mid-Michigan) |
| Stone-coated steel, one 2,713 sq ft roof in Berkley | $43,262.52 (about $15.95 per sq ft) | Roofing Army (Oakland County) |
| Snow guards, added to a metal roof | $500 – $1,500 | Weather Vane Roofing (Mid-Michigan) |
Installed prices as published, per square foot of roof surface, checked October 22, 2026: Mr. Roof June 15, 2026; Weather Vane Roofing July 30, 2026 (it lists tear-off separately); Roofing Army September 23, 2026 (one completed job, not itemized). Tax isn't stated. A roofing square is 100 sq ft, so $7 to $12 per sq ft is $700 to $1,200 per square by our arithmetic.
Roof area isn't floor area: a steep Tudor roof can be far bigger than the house's footprint. The roof squares and cost calculator works out squares from the footprint and pitch. For the same roof in asphalt, standing-seam or exposed-fastener metal, see metal roof vs. shingles; the Metal Roofing Alliance expects metal to cost roughly two to three times what asphalt does.
Hail, wind and fire ratings, and warranties
Metal shingle and stone-coated steel lines compared
| Product | Hail rating | Wind | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| DECRA Shingle XD (stone-coated steel) | UL 2218 Class 4 | Warranty covers blow-off in winds up to 120 mph | Lifetime limited for the original owner of a single-family home; labor and materials for 20 years, then prorated; transferable once within 20 years |
| Westlake Royal Unified Steel Cottage Shingle (stone-coated steel) | Class 4; meets FM's Very Severe Hail standard | Meets wind standards up to 180 mph | Transferable 50-year limited warranty |
| EDCO steel shingles | UL Class 4 | Ask for the rating of the exact product | Lifetime non-prorated warranty covering material and labor if the product fails |
As each manufacturer publishes it, checked October 22, 2026: DECRA spec sheet (2023) and warranty (October 2025); Westlake Royal product page; EDCO brochure (March 2024). A wind rating in a warranty and a wind test standard measure different things. Each warranty has conditions and exclusions; read the one for the product on your estimate.
What a hail warranty covers: read the wording closely. DECRA's warranty covers hailstones of 2.5 inches or less that penetrate "completely through the Roof System", not dents, and it excludes loss of surface coating caused by hail. It also excludes "minor granule loss" and damage from improper foot traffic.
Fire: fire ratings apply to a tested assembly. EDCO says its Class A rating is "achieved with approved system", so ask which underlayment the estimate uses.
Michigan code rules for metal shingles
Michigan's residential code (currently the 2015 edition) has its own section for metal roof shingles, R905.4:
- A solid or closely fitted deck, unless the product is designed for spaced sheathing
- A slope of at least 3 in 12. Manufacturers can set more: DECRA's Shingle XD needs 4:12
- Underlayment, plus the ice barrier from the eaves to at least 24 inches inside the wall line, as on any Michigan shingle roof
- Fastening to the manufacturer's installation instructions
Over the old shingles? Section R908.3.1.1 bars a re-cover where the roof already has two or more layers, or where it's water-soaked or deteriorated. So metal shingles can go over one sound layer of asphalt only where the manufacturer's instructions allow it; two layers must come off. Some manufacturers' blogs say otherwise for other states, but Michigan's rule is the one that applies here. State Farm adds that its roofing discount generally doesn't apply to roofs overlaid on an existing roof, except certain qualifying metal roofs. The reroof permit and overlay checker walks through it.
Snow, ice dams and noise
Does stone-coated steel shed snow?
Sources disagree. DECRA says its textured surface "encourages snow to slide off easily"; Roofing Army, an Oakland County roofer, says stone-coated steel "holds snow longer than a smooth panel, closer to asphalt behavior". Either way, the Metal Roofing Alliance says snow guards fit every style of metal roof; ask for them over doors, walks and lower roofs.
Ice dams
Ice dams come from attic heat melting snow, not from the roof covering, so a metal roof doesn't replace insulation and ventilation. See the ice dams guide and how much snow a roof can hold.
Rain and hail noise
The Metal Roofing Alliance says there's "little difference" in rain and hail noise between metal and other materials. State Farm says metal roofs "can be noisier" than asphalt, but that installation methods and coated products can significantly reduce it.
Downsides of metal shingles and stone-coated steel
- Price: roughly two to three times asphalt, by the Metal Roofing Alliance's estimate
- Dents: State Farm says softer metals such as aluminum can dent from large hail or falling branches
- Walking on it: DECRA says its roofs are typically more walkable than other types but roof jacks may be needed, and its warranty excludes damage from improper foot traffic
- Repairs and color match: DECRA's warranty doesn't guarantee replacement panels will be available or match, and unauthorized repairs can void it
- Movement: State Farm says metal expands and contracts with temperature, which can loosen fasteners over time
Insurance discounts and choosing an installer
State Farm lists Michigan among the states where its discount for impact-resistant roofing is available, for qualifying products; other insurers have their own rules, so ask yours before you choose a product. The Metal Roofing Alliance advises using "a licensed metal roofing professional with experience installing the roof style you choose", and DECRA's warranty excludes damage from improper installation. In Michigan, re-roofing a home for pay needs a Residential Builder or Maintenance and Alteration contractor license; here's how to check one.
Questions about metal shingles
How much do metal shingles cost in Michigan?
Weather Vane Roofing, a Mid-Michigan roofer, publishes metal shingles at $7 to $12 per square foot installed and stone-coated steel at $10 to $15. Mr. Roof's Detroit cost guide lists metal shingles at $7.50 to $12.00 per square foot installed. Roofing Army published a stone-coated steel roof in Berkley at $43,262.52 for 2,713 square feet, about $15.95 per square foot.
What is stone-coated steel roofing?
Steel panels pressed to look like shingles, shakes or tile, with an aluminum-zinc coating, acrylic layers and stone granules on top. DECRA's version weighs about 150 pounds per square installed and carries a UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating.
Can metal shingles go over existing shingles in Michigan?
Over one sound layer, if the manufacturer's instructions allow it. Michigan's residential code doesn't allow a re-cover where the roof already has two or more layers, or is water-soaked or deteriorated.
Does a stone-coated steel roof hold snow?
Sources disagree: DECRA says the textured surface lets snow slide off easily, while Roofing Army, an Oakland County roofer, says it holds snow longer than smooth metal. Snow guards fit every style of metal roof, according to the Metal Roofing Alliance.
Will metal shingles lower my insurance in Michigan?
Possibly. State Farm lists Michigan among the states where it offers a discount for qualifying impact-resistant roofing. Other insurers set their own rules, so ask yours which products qualify before you buy.
How long do metal shingles last?
Michigan roofers publish 40 to 60 years (Mr. Roof) and 30 to 50 years for metal shingles, 40 to 50 for stone-coated steel (Weather Vane Roofing). DECRA's warranty runs for the original owner's lifetime, with full labor and materials cover for the first 20 years.
